CHALLENGE :

Tata Power Ltd., The Largest Power Company of India with diversified Portfolio of different Power segments ( like Coal , Oil , Natural Gas , Solar , Wind and Hydro Power ) is having Coal & Oil based Thermal Power Plant of 1580 MW Installed Generation Capacity on the Coastal Area of Mumbai , Trombay.
Everyday Tata Power transfers 16,000 Tons of Imported Coal from Barges to their Power Plant through Screw Conveyors CGPL,A Wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power Group, is having Coal Based Thermal Power Plant Installed with 4000 MW Generation Capacity with UMPP Technology. This plant is located on Coastal Belt of Gujarat at Gandhidham, Kutchh Both Plants consume approximately 16 Million Tons of Coal every Year, transferred through Screw Conveyors from Ship or Barges to the Coal Handling Unit of Power Plants. The Life of Screw Conveyor , Outer Liner were getting worn out due to high abrasion.

SOLUTION :

We have developed Outer Tube from High Abrasion Steel Plates having 450 – 550 BHN Hardness. Before Rolling Plates into High Capacity Variable Axis , Pyramid type Plate Rolling Machine , We carried out Surface Preparation as per SA 2 ½ , Which is really a tough job.
We carried out Weld Over Lay of High Density of Dendrites of Chromium Carbides without changing the chemistry of the elements. This gave us additional Abrasion Resistance with Hardness of 55 -62 RC.
After Weld Over Lay the Plate were fabricated into the Outer Tube. Similar Operations were carried out for Screw Conveyor

RESULT :

After Installation , We had periodical checks during the Quarterly Preventive Maintenance Shut down or Idle Time, We found that Life expectancy of the Outer Tube and Screw Conveyor is Enhanced Marginally.
